As an independent product reviewer for The Proper Home, it is my job to provide you with unbiased knowledge about the products that make your home and life a better place to be. So, when I received a set of soaps by J.Oberon to review, I was admittedly a bit surprised. Accompanying my soap was a note that read, “Use it for thirty days and let us know what you think.”

I have to admit that when it comes to testing soap, I picture long hot baths, luxurious showers – you know, and of the things of Pretty Woman.

One of my concerns was about writing a review on something as simple as soap. I learned quickly that soap is quite complex – and that soaps can be responsible for a significant number of skin diseases and conditions.

I first went to the J.Oberon web site at http://joberon.com. The site is easy to navigate and offers quite a bit of information that is easy to digest and informative.

The most important concept that you need to understand is that your skin is your largest organ. Cleansing your skin properly is essential. According to research, less than 1% of all Americans cleanse their body and skin well. Well cared-for skin is not the domain of women anymore. I was bit surprised to learn that almost half of J.Oberon customers are men.

A Closer Look at J.Oberon…

J.Oberon soaps are made from European glycerin. If you know about high-quality glycerin (not what you purchase at craft fairs and grocery stores), you already understand that it has some amazing properties for your skin.

Overall Appearance

J.Oberon soaps are visually beautiful works of art. At an average of eight ounces per bar, J.Oberon soaps are about twice the size of traditional soaps. I thought this might be a problem and was prepared to cut my bar in half. I was imaging this bar of soap hitting my toes a terminal velocity in the shower! As it turns out, the larger bar was perfect for my washcloth and made the slippery glycerin much easier to handle!

Scenting

J.Oberon creates soap in both scented and unscented formulations for those with sensitive needs. I received several of each.

A complaint that I have with many scented soaps is that most are over-scented, smell “cute” or “commercial.” J.Oberon places a great emphasis on scenting – and that attention to detail was apparent immediately.

I sampled five scented soaps: Bambu™, Gartini™, Fresh Linen and Rockin’ Rose™ and Perfectly Peach™.

The scents were amazingly complex, sophisticated and provided an energetic ambiance. J.Oberon scents are remarkably clean. The scents also made my bathroom smell glorious! J.Oberon refers to the as “living fragrance.” J.Oberon develops fragrances that are pleasant, sophisticated and add a wonderfully energizing touch to any room.

I wish I suggest a favorite soap that I had tested. They were all amazingly scented. Perfectly Peach™ did catch me by surprise. It smelled exactly like fresh peaches – a scent that I truly love.

One of the more interesting characteristics I noticed was that the scent remained lightly on my skin throughout the entire day. According to J.Oberon, the duration of scent remaining on your skin is more closely associated with skin type and varies among individuals. However, when I used my perfume, the scents did not interfere. According to J.Oberon, their scenting is designed to dissipate and “die” when perfume alcohols touch them.

Performance

J.Oberon soap looks and smells great, but does it really perform? Is its beauty only skin deep?

I went to the J.Oberon site and read about the products I was using. I chuckled when I discovered directions for proper cleaning. However, when I used the soap according to the directions of J.Oberon, the difference was significant – much better than I expected! I did not realize that I was cleaning improperly!

As per J.Oberon instructions, I did not use a moisturizer for a few days – against my better judgment! J.Oberon uses a hygrophilic formula that attracts moisture from the air. I love their statement that “your skin wants a drink of water – not an oil change!” I’ll admit that I was a bit skeptical at first. However, after a few days, I noted no dry or itchy skin and my skin texture felt wonderful – very silky.

Price

As you might expect, J.Oberon soaps are more expensive than traditional soap. My bars last about two months with average usage. However, when you consider the cost of everything required to care for your skin properly, the costs and inconvenience of poorly-cared for skin and overall performance, J.Oberon represents an exceptional value.

Money-Saving Tip! I recently learned that J.Oberon has adopted a model of rewarding existing customers as opposed to conducting general sales. Once you are a customer, you will receive discounts with your products. So, if you wait for a sale, you will be disappointed!

Overall Impression

J.Oberon soaps are among those rare products where uncompromising attention to every detail (including the grosgrain ribbon on the packaging) has resulted in a product that will exceed your expectations – and should be a part of every home. J.Oberon European Glycerin soaps exceeded my expectations in every way and now has a permanent place in my home – and in the homes of many of my friends.
